When office temp Josh Kornbluth (played, in semiautobiographical style, by Josh Kornbluth) is offered a permanent position as secretary for a high-powered attorney, his entire world begins to crumble. The psychological pressure of commitment proves almost too much to bear, leading him to delay mailing 17 very important letters--an oversight that forces him into an all-night adventure that is simultaneously petty and epic. Kornbluth has gained prominence in the world of solo performance, but this is a fully realized film (albeit one in which Kornbl! uth occasionally talks directly to the camera, offering amusing commentary) that vividly captures the insidious anxiety that office work can inspire. Kornbluth's plump face is engaging; you'll find yourself oddly touched (and a little appalled) by his self-destructive behavior. Haiku Tunnel is a strong contribution to the expanding subgenre of office comedies. --Bret FetzerWhen office temp Josh Kornbluth (played, in semiautobiographical style, by Josh Kornbluth) is offered a permanent position as secretary for a high-powered attorney, his entire world begins to crumble. Try as he might, Cliff Starkey just can’t keep out of trouble. With a dead-end career, there’s not much that makes him want to get out of bed in the mornings… except his one passion: Lawn Bowls. Almost as soon as he learned how to walk, he displayed a genius for the sport. To the dismay of the elderly, uptight bowls fraternity in town, Cliff honed his mastery of the game alone, playing by no one’s rules but his own. Now, the time has come for his skill to be recognized, and Rick Schwartz (Vince Vaughn), an American sports agent, is going to ensure that this ‘Bad Boy’ of bowls gets the spotlight he deserves. Cliff’s rock ‘n’ roll attitude and army of screaming female fa! ns soon take England by storm, and he finds himself on the way to super-stardom! But can he take on the stuffy, business-like attitude of the Bowls Association and his senior arch-rival, Ray Speight? Starkey is only one match away from super-stardom as he joins forces with Ray in a ball-busting championship showdown!Nineteen-twenty was a crucial year not just for the Chicago White Sox but for the game of baseball, in the aftermath of the 1919 World Series scandal. This work is both a collective biography of four individuals whose careers in baseball were forever altered in 1920 and an examination of the 1920 baseball season as a whole. It highlights four legendary personalities-Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, the longtime commissioner of Major League Baseball; Babe Ruth, the great pitcher and slugger who changed the game forever; Buck Weaver, the true lone innocent among the Black Sox players who threw the 1919 World Series; and Rube Foster, the fine pitcher, imaginative ma! nager, and great administrator of blackball who founded the Ne! gro Nati onal League. Key events that affected the season and the history of baseball are discussed. Nineteen-twenty was the year that Ruth shattered his own home run record and began a hitting spree that brought in record numbers of fans to the ballparks. It was the year that Rube found a way for large numbers of African-Americans to play the game meaningfully, before loyal crowds, despite Jim Crow laws that kept them out of the majors and minors.

"We were lucky to make it out of Shreveport alive on that early spring day in 1917.

"At noon, before the first game of our doubleheader, my All Nations team was taking batting practice, and as usual, I was studying the crowd. The people fascinated me: all those life stories that I’d never get a chance to hear, like that old colored man smiling and singin! g to himself next to his stern, frowning wife in her flowered hat, or the two white women with their cigarettes and exposed ankles. I was amazed by it all, though we never stayed in a place long enough to learn about anyone or anything more than the game and its players."

A story of the first truly integrated baseball team, decades before Jackie Robinson, set during the early years of World War I. Magic, miracles, and more...

"A Miracle in Shreveport" was first published in Electric Velocipede, May 2007, and it also garnered an Honorable Mention in the Year’s Best Science Fiction vol. 25.

Developers need to keep their code from unintended changes. Pro Git is the version control book for all open source developers and quite a few commercial ones, regardless of whether they are hobbyists or professionals. Developed by Linus Torvalds himself, it has taken the open source world by storm and is set to become the standard for open source development.

Version Control with Git takes you step-by-step through ways to track, merge, and manage software projects, using this highly flexible, open source version control system.

Git permits virtually an infinite variety of methods for development and collaboration. Created by Linus Torvalds to manage development of the Linux kerne! l, it's become the principal tool for distributed version control. Version Control with Git offers tutorials on the most effective ways to use it, as well as friendly yet rigorous advice to help you navigate Git's many functions.

With this book, you will:

  • Learn how to use Git in several real-world development environments
  • Gain insight into Git's common-use cases, initial tasks, and basic functions
  • Understand how to use Git for both centralized and distributed version control
  • Use Git to manage patches, diffs, merges, and conflicts
  • Acquire advanced techniques such as rebasing, hooks, and ways to handle submodules (subprojects)
  • Learn how to use Git with Subversion

Git has earned the respect of developers around the world. Find out how you can benefit from this amazing tool with Ve! rsion Control with Git.

The magical world of C.S. Lewis beloved fantasy comes to life once again in Prince Caspian, the second installment of The Chronicles Of Narnia series. Join Peter, Susan, Edmund, Lucy, the mighty and majestic Aslan, friendly new Narnian creatures and Prince Caspian as they lead the Narnians on a remarkable journey to restore peace and glory to their enchanted land. Continuing the adventure of The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe with more magic and a brand-new hero, Prince Caspian! is a triumph of imagination, courage, love, joy and humor your whole family will want to watch again and again.More exciting than The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian continues the movie franchise based on C.S. Lewis' classic fantasy books. The movie picks up where the first left off... sort of. It's been a year since the Pevensie children--Peter (William Moseley), Susan (Anna Popplewell), Edmund (Skandar Keynes), and Lucy (Georgie Henley)--returned to England from Narnia, and they've just about resigned themselves to living their ordinary lives. But just like that, they're once again transported to a fantastical land, but one with a long-abandoned castle. It turns out that they are in Narnia again--and they themselves lived in that castle, but hundreds of years ago in Narnia time. They've been summoned back to help Prince Caspian (Stardust's Ben Barnes, resembling a young, cultured Keanu Reeves), the rightful heir to! the throne who's become the target of his power-hungry uncle,! King Mr az (Sergio Castellitto). And he's not the only one threatened: Mraz's people, the Telmarines, have pushed all the Narnians--the talking animals, the centaurs and other beasts, the walking trees--to the brink of extinction. Despite some alpha-male bickering, Peter and Caspian agree to fight Mraz alongside the remaining Narnians, including the dwarf Trumpkin (Peter Dinklage) and the swashbuckling mouse Reepicheep (voiced by Eddie Izzard). (Also appearing is Warwick Davis, who was in Willow and the 1989 BBC Prince Caspian.) But of course they most of all miss the noble lion, Aslan, who would have never let this happen to Narnia if he hadn't disappeared. Prince Caspian is epic, evoking memories of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. (Some of the battle elements may seem too familiar, but they were in Lewis's book.) And it's appropriate for kids (Reepicheep could have come out of a Shrek movie), though the tone is dark and there is a lot of death, albeit bloodless. After two! successful films, Disney and Walden Media's franchise has proved successful enough that many of the characters are scheduled to return in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. --David Horiuchi
